Intex Pool Heater

Updated September 2013

intex pool heater

Love your pool so much that you don’t want to be limited to two or three months of use each year? During the cooler months the water can get nippy and limit swim days to only warmer days. Getting an Intex pool heater is the solution to your problem. Here’s what you need to know about Intex Pool Heaters. Intex does not make a pool heater for brick-and-mortar retail sales in the U.S. market, but it is easy to find an above ground pool heater that will fit your Intex pool.

What You Need to Understand About Intex Pools

As you know, above ground pools are a popular choice for consumers with a small budget yet packs the punch of high quality, comparable to more expensive brands. Intex pools are splash of leisure in your back yard. Intex makes a great product that doesn’t water-down the budget (puns intended).

Why Can’t I find an Intex Pool Heater?
The Problem with Intex Pool Heaters

You may have already noticed before finding this site that you can’t find a good intex pool heater online of offline for your above ground pool. Why the heck is that?

Well the short answer is that intex doesn’t make them. But that’s not the whole story… Nobody makes electric or gas powered pool heaters for your intex above ground pools. However, there are some great options for solar heating your intex pool…

Our Top Intex Pool Heating Recommendation: The Solar Heater

Solar pool heaters, we strongly recommend, are the best option for those chilly fall and spring days where you’d love a warm pool. The truth is that you aren’t going to use your above ground pool when there isn’t at least a little sun out.

These heaters are pretty easy to set up and are much nicer and easier to maintain that the gas and electric powered alternative. In fact they are the only reasonable and cheap heater option on the market right now.

They start around $30 bucks (although I would question the effectiveness of one of these) and move up to around $300 for a whole system.

Which Solar Intex Pool Heater to Buy?

The Clear Winner is the Panel System from Eco Saver.

It’s the by far the most effective within its price range, a very reasonable price, and one of the simplest to set up. On top of that, its the #1 Top Reviewed Solar Pool Heaters. Here’s what some of the reviews are saying:

One Amazon Reviewer Says:
“It really is super easy to hook up even if you don’t already have lines installed”

And other noted how well it works: “We checked the temperature the next day and it was still warm.”

Alternative Pool Heater Options

  • Buy an Intex Pool from Europe with an adaptor: The Intex pool heater is only configured for 3000 W, 220 – 240 V electric systems, which is standard in Europe and Asia, but leaves North America out in the cold. The heater is not compatible with 120 V electric systems, which is standard in the USA and Canada. You’re looking at $112 with exchange rate buying one from Europe. While this is on the cheap side for pool heaters, this is not a great option and not something I’d particularly recommend because of how finicky and expensive European to American electric adapting can be (see resources for more info).

  • If you’re a European consumer, you’ll be set with the Intex pool heater. What’s in the box? The pool heater comes standard with safety features such as, switch-off mode (should the heater tip over). It’s also equipped with a thermostat to prevent overheating of the water temperature. Includes detailed instructions and warnings in several languages.
  • Other Electric Pool Heaters: If you don’t want to go the Intex route, you can buy other electric pool heaters for similar prices. Just make sure they’re compatible with the pool you own. If it’s not clear which pools they heater you’re looking at is compatible with, don’t waste time, just call the company.
  • Gas-Powered Pool Heaters: Some of these are monsters but if you have an aboveground pool as big as built in pools, this is what you’ll need. Expect to pay 1-2 grand for one of these. It’s not a pretty way of going about heating your pool, but it will definitely pack a punch.

  • DIY Option: For the strong-willed and well equipped (I mean tools of course), make your own damn pool heater. Check out this video for making one cheaper than $100.

Using Pool Heaters

Use a thermometer to check the water temperature manually as a fail-safe, even if your heater has a built in thermometer. For best results, the heater is most effective when used while the water is between 63 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit but should not be in use while the pool is occupied. Intex pool heaters should not be used when the temperature falls below 32 degrees Fahrenheit lest it risk ice damage or overworking the unit. Intex pool heaters are designed for home-use and not for use in public pools.
